Key takeaways
- Glide calls its apps PWAs and doesn't endorse store wrappers, so the Google Play app is yours: your account, your policy answers, your support.
- Glide makers' reports point to Android as the friendlier store for PIN-login apps – Google accepted one with sign-in instructions in 2023 – but its gates take weeks to plan.
- A Trusted Web Activity keeps Google sign-in working because it runs in Chrome; a WebView app adds native features but needs email PIN or SSO sign-in.
- WebViewGold for Android, built by our team, adds push, offline reconnect, scanners, NFC and App Links; appsubmitter.io runs the Play Console side.
Our recommended solution
Turn your Glide app into a real Android app with WebViewGold
WebViewGold wraps the Glide web app you already have in a native Android Studio project and adds push notifications, a native offline screen, deep links, a QR scanner and more – the native value reviewers at Google Play look for. Built by our own team, and we submit WebViewGold apps all the time.
Can you convert a Glide app to an Android app for Google Play?
Yes. To convert a Glide app to an Android app, package the published Glide app as a Trusted Web Activity or as a WebView app such as WebViewGold, and publish it from your own Play Console account. Glide won't do this for you – but reports from Glide makers suggest Android is the easier store to start with.
Officially, Glide's help center says publishing Glide apps directly to the App Store or Google Play "is not supported", and that Glide doesn't endorse third-party packaging (July 2025). Makers who did it anyway report a pattern. In February 2023, one got a PIN-login app onto Google Play by adding sign-in instructions while Apple kept rejecting it. In April 2023, another wrote: "we managed to get it on Android but we've been rejected again and again over several months with Apple."
That doesn't make Google Play a formality. Google checks who owns the website, whether a new personal account ran a closed test, what your Data safety form says and whether users can delete their accounts. The sections below take those gates one by one for a Glide app.
TWA or WebView: decide by sign-in and device features
For Glide, the packaging choice comes down to two questions: do your users sign in with Google, and does the app need hardware such as scanners or NFC?
| Question | Trusted Web Activity | WebView app (WebViewGold) |
|---|---|---|
| Does Sign in with Google work? | Yes – the pages run in Chrome | No – Google blocks it in embedded WebViews; use email PIN or SSO |
| Do PIN magic links open the app? | Only with verified links on your domain | Only with verified App Links on your domain |
| Scanner, NFC, biometrics, billing? | Not without extra native code | Switchable modules |
| Offline behavior | Whatever the web app does | Native offline fallback with reconnect |
| Domain verification | Required: assetlinks.json, or a browser bar appears | Optional; needed only for App Links |
| Typical tools | Bubblewrap, PWABuilder | WebViewGold Android Studio project or Cloud Builder |
Why Google sign-in fails in the WebView column: Google's routes for Android apps are Custom Tabs and native sign-in through Credential Manager, and both end outside the WebView – Custom Tabs keep the session in Chrome, Credential Manager hands a token to app code. Glide's hosted session never sees either result.
The verification row decides more than it seems. A TWA needs /.well-known/assetlinks.json on the domain it shows. On a glide.page address that file would have to sit on Glide's domain, so a TWA there falls back to a Custom Tab with visible browser UI. Even on a custom domain, confirm that you can serve the file before you commit to a TWA.

Play Console account, closed testing and private Glide apps
A Play Console account costs a one-time registration fee, and its type sets your timeline:
| Account or channel | What Google requires before users get the app |
|---|---|
| Personal account created after November 13, 2023 | A closed test with 12 or more testers opted in for 14 days in a row, then an application for production access; device verification on a physical phone |
| Organization account (D-U-N-S number) | No testing requirement; normal review |
| Private app through managed Google Play | Restricted to organizations you name by Organization ID; delivered through their EMM |
Glide apps usually serve a team, which helps with testing: the warehouse crew, technicians or volunteers who will use the app are your testers. Google looks at engagement, not just opt-ins, so give them real tasks for the 14 days and ship an update that fixes what they report – our closed testing guide has a full plan.
If the app never needs to be public, the private route is often smarter. In Play Console's advanced settings, the Managed Google Play tab limits an app to up to 1,000 organizations, and Google says it shows up in their EMM console within minutes of publishing. Permanently private apps are exempt from Google's account deletion requirement, and apps kept permanently private to one organization's internal users are the only permanent exception to the target API rules. appsubmitter.io can advise on the MDM side.
Getting Google's reviewers past a Glide PIN
Play Console asks for reviewer sign-in details under App content > App access, and Google expects them to be reusable and valid at all times. A Glide PIN changes with every sign-in, so give Google what it needs to fetch one:
- Create a review user in your Glide users table with a realistic role and rows it owns, so screens aren't empty.
- Set up a mailbox for that address that opens in webmail with a password, without 2-step verification or device checks.
- In App access, enter the app email, the webmail address and password, and numbered steps: enter the email, open the mailbox, type the PIN.
- Test the whole flow from a clean browser outside your office network.
Avoid SMS PIN for review accounts – nobody at Google can read texts sent to your phone. And don't switch sign-in off or show reviewers a lighter version of the app: Google's Deceptive Behavior policy expects apps to behave the same for reviewers and regular users. The same discipline protects you on iOS, as our Glide 5.6 article explains.
The shortcut from Glide to Google Play
WebViewGold: your Glide app, native on Android
Instead of building native features from scratch, start from WebViewGold. You get ready-made Xcode and Android Studio projects for your website, with native modules you switch on in the configuration:
- Push notificationsOneSignal or Firebase, for real, personal events
- Native offline screenNo browser error pages when the connection drops
- Native splash screenApp-like start instead of a loading web page
- Deep linksLinks open the right screen inside the app
- QR & barcode scannerDevice features the website alone can't offer
- In-app purchasesNative purchase flows where the store requires them
No tool guarantees an approval: Google still judges what your app offers. Use the native features in your main user journey and keep proving that you own the website – our App Specialists review your WebViewGold app before it goes to Google Play.
The Google Play policies a wrapped Glide app has to meet
| Policy | What Google checks | What it means for a Glide app |
|---|---|---|
| Spam: Webviews and Affiliate Spam | The app doesn't show a website without its owner's permission | Wrap your custom domain (Maker plan and up) and match developer name, email and website to it |
| Limited Functionality | The app isn't static and offers app-specific features | Use scanning, NFC, push or offline handling in the main tasks |
| Data safety | Declarations match what the app and its web content collect | Include user emails, table data, uploads, Glide, Google Sheets and any SDKs |
| Account deletion | In-app deletion plus a web resource listed in the Data safety form | A delete button that removes the user's rows, and a public request page |
| Target API level | New apps and updates target Android 16 (API 36) since August 31, 2026 | Build from a project that targets API 36 and verify the AAB before upload |
| Deceptive Behavior | The app behaves the same for reviewers and users | No sheet-driven features that appear after approval |
The first row is the Glide-specific catch: a glide.page address belongs to Glide, not to you. Google's spam rule is about permission from the site's owner, so a custom domain that clearly matches your developer account is your strongest signal. More on evidence and appeals in our WebView spam policy guide.
Building the Glide Android app with WebViewGold
WebViewGold, which our team develops, gives you an Android Studio project for your Glide URL – or, through the separately sold Cloud Builder, a signed build without installing Android Studio. Set it up like this:
- Fix the package name before the first upload; it's permanent.
- Load the custom domain of your Glide app.
- Turn on the modules your users need: QR and barcode scanning for stock and assets, NFC for tagged equipment, the document scanner for paperwork, biometric authentication for shared or sensitive accounts.
- Add push with Firebase or OneSignal and request
POST_NOTIFICATIONSon Android 13 and later when a user opts into alerts. - Enable the offline fallback with reconnect, so a dead zone shows a native screen and the app recovers on its own.
- Test Glide's pickers. Image and file pickers depend on the app's
onShowFileChooserhandling; try camera and gallery on several devices. - Check the back gesture on every tab and detail screen.
- Set up App Links only if your domain can serve
assetlinks.json; otherwise PIN magic links keep opening Chrome, and users should type the PIN. - Use Google Play Billing (Extended license) if you sell digital content in the app; Stripe invoices for services can stay.
- Build an AAB targeting API 36 and enroll in Play App Signing. Details are in our target API guide.
No tool can promise an approval on Google Play either. What WebViewGold changes is the starting point: a reviewer opens an app with native behavior instead of a spreadsheet view in a frame.
Release plan: from internal test to production
- Internal testing: upload the AAB and check the pre-launch report for browser error pages and sign-in dead ends.
- App content: privacy policy, App access with PIN instructions, content rating, target audience, Data safety and the account deletion URL.
- Store listing: screenshots from the app on a phone and a description of the features reviewers can reach.
- Closed testing for new personal accounts: 14 days, 12 or more engaged testers, at least one improved build.
- Production: apply for access if required, then release with a staged rollout.
appsubmitter.io can run all of this in your own Play Console: a CI/CD pipeline for signed AABs, Play App Signing and the upload key, the listing, Data safety, the closed-test plan and communication with Google's reviewers. Code changes are quoted separately and upfront. Book the Android package or ask questions in a free consultation call. Planning the App Store too? Checklist before you submit
- You chose TWA or WebView based on Google sign-in and the device features you need.
- The app loads your custom domain, and developer name, email and website match it.
- A TWA verifies the domain with assetlinks.json – or you went with a WebView app.
- App access contains reusable PIN instructions with a review mailbox that needs no extra verification.
- The review user has a realistic role and owns rows, so no screen is empty.
- Push uses Firebase or OneSignal and requests POST_NOTIFICATIONS when users opt in.
- Image and file pickers, the back gesture and the offline screen work on real devices.
- The AAB targets API level 36 and is signed through Play App Signing.
- Data safety covers Glide, your tables, uploads and SDKs; account deletion works in the app and on the web.
- New personal accounts have 12 or more engaged testers for 14 days – or the app goes out privately via managed Google Play.
