PWABuilder Alternative: TWA, WKWebView Wrapper or Native Template – Which Route Fits Your PWA?

PWABuilder is a free, open-source Microsoft project that packages an existing PWA for the Microsoft Store, Google Play (as a Trusted Web Activity) and – marked experimental – the App Store. For Windows and Android it is hard to beat. For a dependable iOS app with push, in-app purchases, an offline screen or Face ID, a native template such as WebViewGold is the stronger PWABuilder alternative. Here is an honest comparison, the review risks and a switch that keeps your listings.

Recommended solution: WebViewGold – native iOS and Android apps from your web app, made by our team.

Key takeaways

  • PWABuilder is free, MIT-licensed and backed by Microsoft – the natural choice for Microsoft Store packages and Android Trusted Web Activities.
  • Its iOS output is an Xcode project around a WKWebView, labeled Experimental and community-maintained as of October 2026; building it needs a Mac with Xcode.
  • A TWA shows your PWA in the browser engine; a WebView template such as WebViewGold adds native code around it – offline screen, StoreKit, Face ID, widgets.
  • Reuse the bundle ID, package name and upload key and publish the new build as an update to keep your ratings.

Our recommended solution

Looking for a PWABuilder alternative? Meet WebViewGold

WebViewGold turns your website or web app into native iOS and Android projects for a one-time price – with push notifications, a native offline screen, deep links, a QR scanner, in-app purchases and more. You own the projects and publish in your own developer accounts. Built by our own team.

Do you need a PWABuilder alternative? The short answer

You need a PWABuilder alternative when your goal is a dependable iPhone app rather than a packaged PWA. PWABuilder remains an excellent free tool for the Microsoft Store and for Android Trusted Web Activities. For iOS, a native template with ready-made modules – push, in-app purchases, an offline screen, Face ID – gives App Review more to approve and gives you more to build on.

PWABuilder is an open-source Microsoft project under the MIT license, and its main repository is actively maintained, with commits as recent as October 6, 2026. Point it at a PWA with a proper web app manifest and HTTPS, and it generates store packages – free and without lock-in. It suits teams that already have a solid PWA.

The friction starts on iOS. The App Store target is labeled "Experimental" in PWABuilder's publish screen, and the separate iOS packaging repository, archived on September 11, 2025, describes iOS support as "community driven". That is an honest status, not a defect – but it matters when the iPhone app is the one your business depends on.

What PWABuilder produces for each store

PWABuilder is a packaging tool, not a hosted app builder. Your PWA keeps running on your server, and PWABuilder creates the store wrapper around it:

  • Microsoft Store: MSIX packages (a .msixbundle plus a .classic.appxbundle) generated with data from your Partner Center account. This is PWABuilder's home turf.
  • Google Play: an Android App Bundle (.aab) plus a signing keystore and its key information, built with Bubblewrap as a Trusted Web Activity. An "Other Android" option produces an unsigned APK.
  • App Store: a zip file with an Xcode project – a Swift app that shows your PWA in a WKWebView. The documentation lists a macOS device with Xcode as a requirement.

Native extras are limited. The Android package can delegate notifications and location to the browser and use Google Play Billing through the Digital Goods API. The iOS project supports push via Firebase Cloud Messaging and StoreKit 2 purchases, although PWABuilder notes that "more manual steps need to be done".

Publishing is up to you: PWABuilder doesn't submit apps, so you upload through Partner Center, Play Console and App Store Connect yourself. In return, web content changes reach the store apps without resubmission.

In a free consultation call we look at your website or web app and tell you honestly which route fits – WebViewGold, a framework or a native build – and what it takes to get through review. Prefer to hand it off? We set up signing and CI/CD and submit the app for you.

Trusted Web Activity vs. WebView: what actually differs

PWABuilder's Android package is a Trusted Web Activity (TWA). A TWA isn't a WebView: it opens your PWA full screen in the user's browser, typically Chrome, and uses Digital Asset Links to prove that app and website belong together – without a valid /.well-known/assetlinks.json, a browser address bar appears. A WebView app embeds the system's rendering engine in your own native app instead.

AspectTrusted Web Activity (PWABuilder, Android)WebView template (WebViewGold)
RenderingThe user's browser engine with all of its web featuresThe system WebView – WKWebView on iOS, Android System WebView
Native code around your contentLittle: notification and location delegation, Play Billing via the Digital Goods APIA full native project with modules for push, purchases, biometrics, scanning and more
OfflineWhatever your service worker cachesNative offline fallback screen; local HTML bundling on iOS
Google sign-inWorks as in the browser, because a TWA isn't an embedded WebViewBlocked in embedded WebViews: use ASWebAuthenticationSession or Google's native SDK on iOS, Custom Tabs or Credential Manager on Android
Ownership checkMandatory Digital Asset Links verificationOptional, but useful for verified App Links and as proof of ownership
iOS counterpartNone – iOS has no Trusted Web ActivitiesThe same approach on iOS and Android

Neither approach wins in general. A TWA is the purest way to ship a PWA on Android; a WebView app gives the same web app native features on both platforms – and on iOS it is the only one of the two that exists.

PWABuilder vs. WebViewGold vs. Capacitor vs. Median.co

PWABuilder compared with three other routes to the stores, as of October 2026:

In short: PWABuilder and Capacitor are free but leave native work and publishing to you. Median.co and WebViewGold ship native features ready to use – Median with an ongoing plan for new builds, WebViewGold as a one-time purchase.

Review risks when you ship a packaged PWA

Reviewers don't care which tool produced the package – they judge the app. These rules apply to every option in the table.

App Store

  • Guideline 4.2 Minimum Functionality. The main risk for a PWA in a WKWebView: Apple wants features that "elevate it beyond a repackaged website". PWABuilder's documentation says iOS acceptance "depends only on UI/UX of your PWA and usage of native capabilities", and its blog is frank: "PWABuilder doesn't guarantee that your app will be accepted into Apple's App Store." Our article on WebView apps rejected under Guideline 4.2 shows what reviewers look for.
  • Guideline 4.2.6. No issue when you submit your own PWA, but a real one for agencies that upload client PWAs under the agency's account – see Guideline 4.2.6 for WebView apps.
  • Guideline 4.3 Spam. One packaged PWA per city or branch invites a spam rejection; Apple asks developers not to "create multiple Bundle IDs of the same app".
  • Guidelines 2.5.2 and 5.6. Content updates without resubmission are fine; adding features through the web layer after approval is not – read our 2.5.2 and 5.6 articles.

Google Play

  • Webviews spam and limited functionality. Google rejects apps that show someone else's website without permission, and thin apps of your own site. A verified TWA proves ownership, but not usefulness – the WebView spam policy guide covers both.
  • Testing and target API. New personal developer accounts need 12 testers opted in for 14 days before production (see the closed testing guide), and since August 31, 2026 new apps and updates must target Android 16 (API level 36).

Our recommended alternative

WebViewGold: native iOS and Android apps from your website

Instead of building native features from scratch, start from WebViewGold. You get ready-made Xcode and Android Studio projects for your website, with native modules you switch on in the configuration:

  • Push notificationsOneSignal or Firebase, for real, personal events
  • Native offline screenNo browser error pages when the connection drops
  • Native splash screenApp-like start instead of a loading web page
  • Deep linksLinks open the right screen inside the app
  • QR & barcode scannerDevice features the website alone can't offer
  • In-app purchasesNative purchase flows where the store requires them

No tool guarantees an approval: Apple still judges what your app offers. Use the native features in your main user journey – our App Specialists review your WebViewGold app before it goes to the App Store.

When PWABuilder is the better choice

PWABuilder is the better choice when:

  • The Microsoft Store is a target. MSIX packaging from a PWA is PWABuilder's strongest feature. WebViewGold builds iOS and Android apps, so for Windows, PWABuilder stays the right tool – plenty of teams use both.
  • Your PWA already shines on Android. If it works offline, sends notifications and feels app-like, a TWA ships it with the browser's full engine and almost no native code to maintain.
  • The budget is zero. PWABuilder and Bubblewrap are free; you pay only the store fees.
  • iOS can wait, or your developers are happy to extend the generated Xcode project themselves.
  • Your users sign in with Google. Inside a TWA, Google's OAuth flow works as it does in Chrome, without workarounds.

When WebViewGold is the stronger path, especially on iOS

WebViewGold is the website-to-app product built by our own team, so read this section with that in mind. It fits when the iPhone app is a product in its own right:

  • Native features without native development. The Xcode project ships modules you switch on: push via OneSignal, Firebase or Pushwoosh, a native offline fallback screen, Face ID and Touch ID, StoreKit purchases (Extended license), QR and barcode scanning, NFC tag reading, Widget and Share Extensions and an App Clip. The Android Studio project adds Google Play Billing, biometric authentication, App Links and an offline fallback with reconnect.
  • One configuration step. Enter your PWA's URL – or a local HTML folder – in Config.swift. Your PWA stays the single source of content.
  • No Mac if you don't want one. The separately sold Cloud Builder configures, builds and uploads in the browser, or our team sets the app up for you.
  • Ownership. A one-time purchase, no subscription, published in your own developer accounts.

No tool can promise an approval – the modules have to serve your users' main journey. But a reviewer who finds Face ID re-login, push for real account events and a native offline screen is looking at an app, not a bookmark. See what WebViewGold includes.

Switching from PWABuilder to WebViewGold without a new listing

PWABuilder never touches your store accounts, so a switch is mostly about identifiers and keys. Ship the new app as an update, and ratings, reviews and installs stay.

  1. Confirm account control. Make sure you – not a former freelancer – hold the Account Holder role at Apple and own the Play Console account.
  2. Reuse the identifiers. Copy the bundle ID from App Store Connect and the package name from Play Console into the WebViewGold projects.
  3. Find the keystore PWABuilder generated. New apps are enrolled in Play App Signing automatically, so Google holds the app signing key and PWABuilder's keystore is normally your upload key. If it is lost, the account owner can request an upload key reset in Play Console.
  4. Keep assetlinks.json online. It still verifies your App Links and shows that app and domain belong together.
  5. Configure WebViewGold. Set the start URL, enable the modules your users need and design the offline fallback.
  6. Carry over push and purchases. Keep your Firebase project if the iOS project used FCM – WebViewGold supports it. In-app purchase product IDs live in App Store Connect and Play Console and stay the same.
  7. Test and release as an update via TestFlight and a Play testing track, with higher version numbers and review notes that describe the native features.

How appsubmitter.io helps – whether you switch or stay

appsubmitter.io is our submission service for the App Store and Google Play. App Specialists, backed by AI-powered pre-submission checks, set up code signing and a CI/CD pipeline in your own accounts, prepare the store listings, the App Privacy details and the Data safety form, submit the app and handle the conversation with App Review and the Google Play review team. Code changes aren't part of the package – if your app needs any, we quote them upfront.

You don't have to switch tools to use it: we can handle listings, privacy forms and submission for your PWABuilder packages, or step in after a rejection. If you move to WebViewGold, we ship the new build as an update to your existing listings. Book appsubmitter.io for iOS and Android or describe your PWA in a free consultation call first.

Checklist: choosing your website-to-app route

  • List the stores you need – PWABuilder adds the Microsoft Store, WebViewGold focuses on iOS and Android.
  • Check that your PWA has a valid web app manifest, HTTPS and a service worker that handles offline use.
  • Publish /.well-known/assetlinks.json with your app signing key fingerprint before the first Android release.
  • Decide which native features iPhone users need: push, purchases, Face ID, an offline screen, widgets.
  • Confirm you have a Mac with Xcode – or plan a cloud build or a done-for-you setup.
  • Keep the bundle ID, package name and upload keystore when you replace an existing app.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best PWABuilder alternative for iOS?
For a store-ready iPhone app, a native template with ready-made modules is the most practical PWABuilder alternative. WebViewGold, made by our team, gives you an Xcode project with push, StoreKit purchases, Face ID and an offline screen. Developers who prefer writing native code can use Capacitor; teams wanting a hosted builder can look at Median.co.
Is PWABuilder's iOS packaging still supported?
As of October 2026, yes – with caveats. The App Store target lives in PWABuilder's main app and is labeled Experimental. The former iOS packaging repository was archived on September 11, 2025 and describes iOS support as community-driven, without PWABuilder team developers maintaining it. Windows and Android are the mature targets.
Do I need a Mac to publish a PWA on the App Store?
With PWABuilder, yes: its iOS package is an Xcode project, and the documentation requires a macOS device with Xcode. The same applies if you build a WebViewGold Xcode project yourself. WebViewGold's Cloud Builder, sold separately, builds and uploads in the browser instead, and appsubmitter.io can take care of signing and submission.
Can I switch from a TWA to a WebView app and keep my Play Store listing?
Yes. If the new app uses the same package name and is signed with your upload key, it goes out as a normal update with ratings and installs intact. With Play App Signing, Google keeps the app signing key, so a lost upload key isn't fatal: the account owner can request an upload key reset in Play Console.
Will Apple accept my PWA in a WKWebView?
Apple has no rule against WebViews, but Guideline 4.2 asks for more than a repackaged website, and even PWABuilder says acceptance depends on your UI/UX and use of native capabilities. Native navigation, push for real account events, an offline screen and Face ID sign-in help. A bare wrapper around a marketing site gives the reviewer little to approve.
Can I use PWABuilder and WebViewGold together?
Yes, and it is a sensible split. Keep PWABuilder for the Microsoft Store package, where it is strongest, and use WebViewGold for the iOS and Android apps that need native features. Your PWA stays the single source of content for all three stores.
