Key takeaways
- Google Play asks two questions about a wrapped Webflow site: do you own it (Webviews and Affiliate Spam policy), and does the app offer more than a static website (Limited Functionality)?
- Webflow serves assetlinks.json only on Premium Site plans or higher with a custom domain – never on webflow.io. Sort out hosting before you build the app.
- A Trusted Web Activity is built for progressive web apps, and Webflow has no built-in PWA. For most Webflow sites, a WebView wrapper with native features is the practical route.
- New personal Play Console accounts need a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days, and as of October 2026 every upload is an AAB targeting API level 36.
- WebViewGold, made by our team, delivers the Android Studio project with push, App Links and offline fallback; appsubmitter.io handles signing, Data safety and the release.
Our recommended solution
Turn your Webflow app into a real Android app with WebViewGold
WebViewGold wraps the Webflow web app you already have in a native Android Studio project and adds push notifications, a native offline screen, deep links, a QR scanner and more – the native value reviewers at Google Play look for. Built by our own team, and we submit WebViewGold apps all the time.
Can you turn a Webflow site into an Android app for Google Play?
Yes. To convert Webflow to an Android app, you wrap the published site in a native Android project and publish it through your own Google Play Console – Webflow has no app export or store publishing of its own. Google accepts WebView apps, but it looks closely at two questions: is the website yours, and does the app do anything the website doesn't?
The first question comes from Google Play's Spam policy, which rules out apps whose primary purpose is "to drive affiliate traffic to a website or provide a webview of a website without permission" from its owner or administrator. The second comes from the Limited Functionality and Content rule, which catches apps that are "static without app-specific functionalities". A Webflow landing page can pass the first test and still fail the second.
So the honest advice is the same as for the App Store: wrap Webflow projects that give people a reason to come back – a publication with personalized push, a catalog, a member area, an event or venue site, a store with order updates – and leave a pure marketing site on the web. If you're also planning the iPhone version, our guide to converting Webflow to an iOS app covers Apple's stricter take on the same question.
Prove the Webflow site is yours: assetlinks.json and matching details
A Google reviewer can't see your Webflow workspace. They see a package name, a developer account and a domain, and those need to line up.
- Choose the right Site plan. Webflow hosts
.well-knownfiles only on Premium Site plans or higher with a custom domain; onwebflow.ioit isn't possible. Without it, you can't publish a Digital Asset Links file at all. - Upload
/.well-known/assetlinks.jsonwith your package name and the SHA-256 fingerprint of the app signing key. Play App Signing re-signs your app, so take the fingerprint from the app signing page in Play Console – the upload key alone isn't enough. - Declare verified App Links for the same host: an intent filter with
android:autoVerify="true", thehttpsscheme and your domain. Check the result withadb shell pm get-app-linksor on the Deep links page in Play Console (Android Developers). - Make the public details match. Developer name, contact email, store listing website and privacy policy URL should point to the same domain and business as the Webflow site, and the site can link to your Play listing.
- Agencies take note. Publish in the client's own developer account, or keep written permission from the site owner that names the package. The policy asks about permission, not about who designed the site.
Our guide to the Google Play WebView spam policy explains which evidence helps in a review or an appeal.

WebView, TWA or exported code: what fits a Webflow site on Android
| Approach | What it requires | Fit for Webflow |
|---|---|---|
| WebView wrapper such as WebViewGold | A native Android Studio project that loads your custom domain | Best fit: CMS, Ecommerce and forms keep working, native features come from the wrapper |
| Trusted Web Activity (Bubblewrap, PWABuilder) | A progressive web app plus Digital Asset Links; if verification fails, the site opens in a Custom Tab with browser UI | Weak fit: Webflow has no built-in PWA, and its /manifest.json is an internal routing file, not a web app manifest |
| Code export bundled with Capacitor | Webflow's code export, available on paid Workspace plans | Weak fit: CMS, Ecommerce and User Accounts aren't exported; forms and site search stop working |
| Webflow Cloud app, wrapped | A Next.js or Astro app hosted on Webflow Cloud | Only if you write application code anyway |
| Native rebuild in Kotlin | Native screens on top of Webflow's CMS API or your own backend | Best experience, highest effort |
A verified TWA is a strong ownership signal, but it adds no features: it shows your site full screen in the user's browser, and offline support or notifications would have to come from a PWA that Webflow doesn't provide. A WebView wrapper puts those features in the native layer instead, which is why it is the usual choice for Webflow sites.
From Play Console account to production: the release path
- Register a developer account as a person or an organization. Google charges a one-time registration fee, organizations need a D-U-N-S number, and new personal accounts verify a physical Android device in the Play Console app.
- Build an Android App Bundle. Google Play takes AAB files, not APKs, for new apps. You sign uploads with your upload key; with Play App Signing, Google keeps the app signing key and signs what users download.
- Target API level 36. Since August 31, 2026, new apps and updates must target Android 16 – see our target API level guide for the behavior changes that come with it.
- Start with internal testing and read the pre-launch report: crashes, blank screens and accessibility warnings show up there before a reviewer sees them.
- Run the closed test if it applies. Personal accounts created after November 13, 2023 need at least 12 testers who stay opted in for 14 consecutive days before they can apply for production access – our closed testing guide shows how to recruit real testers.
- Complete App content: privacy policy, sign-in details for reviewers, Data safety, content rating, target audience and ads declaration.
- Release to production, ideally as a staged rollout, and watch Android vitals.
Android behaviors your Webflow site has to survive
- Back navigation. Users expect the back gesture to step through pages and leave the app on the start page. Apps targeting Android 16 get predictive back by default, so the wrapper has to map it to the WebView's history.
- Edge-to-edge layout. When you target API 35 or higher, content draws behind the status and navigation bars. Fixed Webflow navbars and cookie bars need insets – test with gesture navigation and with three-button navigation.
- File uploads. A Webflow form with a file field does nothing in a plain WebView until the app implements
onShowFileChooser. A dead button is exactly what the Broken Functionality policy describes. - Notification permission. On Android 13 and higher,
POST_NOTIFICATIONSis a runtime permission. Ask when it makes sense – after someone follows a topic or places an order – not on first launch. - Interactions on mid-range phones. Heavy scroll animations and GSAP timelines that feel smooth on a laptop can stutter in Android System WebView on cheaper devices. Simplify them on the mobile breakpoints.
- Links to other domains. Booking widgets, maps and social profiles belong in Custom Tabs or the browser, not in your WebView.
- Web furniture. Hide the navbar, footer and "Made in Webflow" badge in app mode with a custom user agent. If your cookie banner disappears too, consent still has to work – natively if necessary.
The shortcut from Webflow to Google Play
WebViewGold: your Webflow app, native on Android
Instead of building native features from scratch, start from WebViewGold. You get ready-made Xcode and Android Studio projects for your website, with native modules you switch on in the configuration:
- Push notificationsOneSignal or Firebase, for real, personal events
- Native offline screenNo browser error pages when the connection drops
- Native splash screenApp-like start instead of a loading web page
- Deep linksLinks open the right screen inside the app
- QR & barcode scannerDevice features the website alone can't offer
- In-app purchasesNative purchase flows where the store requires them
No tool guarantees an approval: Google still judges what your app offers. Use the native features in your main user journey and keep proving that you own the website – our App Specialists review your WebViewGold app before it goes to Google Play.
Accounts, billing and the Data safety form
Member accounts
Since Webflow sunset User Accounts on January 29, 2026, member areas run on third-party tools such as Memberstack or Outseta. Email and password sign-in works inside a WebView; Google sign-in does not, because Google blocks its OAuth pages in embedded web views (disallowed_useragent). Hand that flow to Custom Tabs, which Google recommends for sign-in from apps, or implement it natively with Credential Manager – and test that the session arrives back in the app. If people can create accounts, Google requires deletion inside the app and a web link where they can request deletion without the app – see the account deletion guide.
Payments
Physical goods sold through Webflow Ecommerce can keep the Stripe or PayPal checkout. Digital memberships, courses and downloads generally need Google Play Billing; some countries allow alternative billing under specific programs, so check the rules for your markets. WebViewGold for Android supports Google Play Billing.
Data safety
Google counts data collected through a WebView if you control the content, which you do with your own Webflow site. Declare form submissions, member data, orders and everything sent by analytics, marketing and chat scripts in your custom code – our Data safety guide shows how to audit them.
Convert Webflow to an Android app with WebViewGold
WebViewGold, the website-to-app solution made by our team, gives you a ready-made Android Studio project. You enter your Webflow custom domain in the configuration and enable native modules instead of coding them:
- Push notifications through Firebase, OneSignal or Pushwoosh – fed, for example, by Webflow's
collection_item_createdwebhook for new articles orecomm_order_changedfor shipping updates. - Offline fallback with reconnect, so a dead zone shows a native screen instead of a
net::ERR_page. - App Links and deep linking that match the
assetlinks.jsonon your domain. - A custom user agent for your app-mode styles.
- Device features where they fit: QR and barcode scanning for event check-in, biometric authentication for member areas, Google Play Billing, AdMob for publishers and the native Google Play review dialog.
It is a one-time purchase, the project is yours and you publish in your own Play Console. No Android Studio setup? The separately sold Cloud Builder builds in the browser, and our team can do the setup for you. No tool can promise that Google approves an app – but a wrapper with these features answers the Limited Functionality question far better than a bare WebView.
Store listing, review and where appsubmitter.io comes in
Write the listing around what the app does – "new articles by topic, saved for offline reading", "order updates for your purchases" – and use screenshots of those screens, not your homepage. Keep other companies' brands out of the title and icon. Under App content, give reviewers sign-in details that are reusable, free of one-time codes and valid from any country; Google's pre-launch crawler can't fill in WebView login forms on its own, so test the demo login yourself.
If Google rejects the app, the Policy status page names the policy. Fix the cause, upload a build with a higher version code and deactivate the rejected bundle on every track. Google allows one appeal per enforcement action, so save it for cases where you can prove the reviewer missed something. The Apple side has its own pitfalls, especially Guideline 5.6 for wrapped Webflow sites.
appsubmitter.io handles the Google Play side end to end in your own Play Console: upload key and Play App Signing, AAB builds through a CI/CD pipeline, store listing, Data safety form, closed testing plan, submission and communication with Google's review team. Code changes are quoted separately, and your app doesn't need to be finished when you book. Book the Android service or talk it through in a free consultation call.
Checklist before you submit
- The Webflow site runs on your custom domain with a Premium Site plan or higher, so assetlinks.json can be hosted.
- assetlinks.json lists your package name and the Play app signing SHA-256 fingerprint, and App Links verify.
- Developer name, contact email, website and privacy policy match the site's domain and owner.
- The app offers what the website can't: push for real events, offline fallback, App Links, scanning or billing.
- The AAB targets API level 36 and is uploaded with your upload key under Play App Signing.
- Back navigation, edge-to-edge insets and file uploads work on Android 15 and 16.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS is requested at a sensible moment on Android 13 and higher.
- Google sign-in uses Custom Tabs or Credential Manager instead of the WebView, and account deletion works in the app and on the web.
- The Data safety form covers forms, member data, orders and every script in Webflow custom code.
- For a new personal account, at least 12 testers stayed opted in for 14 consecutive days.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert Webflow to an Android app without Android Studio?
Does Google Play accept a Webflow site in a WebView?
Can I use a Trusted Web Activity for my Webflow site?
/manifest.json is an internal routing file. A TWA would show your site full screen without adding features, so a WebView wrapper with native modules is usually the better route for Webflow.Do I really need 12 testers for 14 days?
How long does Google Play review take?
Do I need a Premium Webflow plan for an Android app?
assetlinks.json only on Premium Site plans or higher with a custom domain. Without it, you can't verify App Links, and Google's reviewers have fewer signals that the site in your app is really yours.Recommended solution
